Introduction

P

opulation biobanks provide new opportunities for biomedical research and development of personalized medicine and public health genomics. What these biobanks do is accumulate biological material from both healthy subjects and patients suffering from certain diseases. This is done in order to support research aimed at improving the diagnostic process and treatment of many diseases. There are disease risk factors, characteristic of the population living in a specific geographic region, which are necessary to know in order to protect patients in a better way. The aim of this biobank is to collect biological samples and to establish a database on the health of a representative sample of residents of the S´wie˛tokrzyskie Province. Title of biobank: S´wie˛tokrzyski Biobank Site location: Regional Science and Technology Center, Podzamcze 45, 26-060 Che˛ciny, Poland Contact information: Web: www.biobank.rcnt.pl E-mail: [email protected] Contact: Marcin Perz, Director, [email protected] Ma1gorzata Witon´ PhD, [email protected] Joanna Glen´ska-Olender, PhD student, joanna.glenska@ rcnt.pl Date of operations: March 2014 Date range of cases: Sample collection—July 2014

Number of ongoing ethical permissions for studies: 2 What are the most valuable/highest priority cases in your biobank? We aim to create a collection of data regarding anthropometric measurements—metabolic profile and blood pressure—creating a database on health status of a representative group of inhabitants of the S´wie˛tokrzyskie voivodeship. We are establishing a long-term telemonitoring system for people suffering from hypertension. The biobank will collect serum samples, plasma and DNA. In addition, stem cells from cord blood will be stored in the vapor phase of liquid nitrogen. What are your major challenges? 1) Publishing research based on the biobank’s samples. 2) Setting up international networks. 3) Developing innovative methodologies. What would you do with $1 million to improve the value of your biobank? We would like to promote the free collection of umbilical cord blood, increasing the availability of new therapies using stem cells. Our dream is to increase the availability of modern therapies using stem cells. In addition, DNA samples from families will enable us to work on genetic imprinting. The more samples we have, the better we are able to study them and their related trends.

Category of biobank: Basic/Clinical Focus of biobank: Cardiovascular, umbilical cord blood stem cells Membership of biobank: Biobanking and Biomolecular Resources Research Infrastructure (BBMRI) Major source of funding; The S´wie˛tokrzyskie region government
