〈 Editor’s Letter 〉 Critical Thinking

A

s clinicians we are constantly faced with decisions on the appropriateness of care and diagnostic tests. Self-directed learning and evidence-based medicine are here to stay but a key step to engaging this strategy is the ability to read and evaluate our medical literature critically. We are best considered practicing scientists using our ever-expanding knowledge base to influence clinical judgment. The problem is that our educational system does a relatively poor job of developing critical thinking skills and as a result we tend to adopt ideologies rather than information. If you have ever participated in the discussion about medial column instability you will quickly recognize “the camps” of ideology focused on the presence or absence of first tarsometatarsal hypermobility. One approach to evolve critical thinking education is a regular educational forum of journal club. The first record of a journal club was hosted by Sir William Osler at McGill University in Montreal in 1875. Today, journal clubs are an integral part of most educational curricula. The most common stated goals for journal club are to teach critical appraisal skills, have an impact on clinical practice and to help keep up with current literature. A translational skill is the art of medical writing. This skill is a learned one, not intuitive and must be built on a solid foundation of critical thinking. At Foot & Ankle Specialist we recognize this learning curve and are pleased to support our colleagues and students as they embark on this learning journey. We are very pleased to be hosting our 2nd annual Foot and Ankle Specialist Resident Award in 2014. The FAS Resident Award provides a $500 cash prize for the best paper as judged by our FAS reviewers’ panel. The lead author must be a student in residency but having mentors as coauthors is encouraged. On submission of your manuscript to FAS, please designate that you would like the paper to be considered for the FAS Resident Award. Happy travels on your critical thinking journey, Gregory C. Berlet, MD Co-Editor
