INTRODUCING THE "AGING TRENDS" SERIES

The "Aging Trends - Thailand" report by Heather Francese and Kevin Kinsella in this issue is the first of a series of "Aging Trends" reports. Under the editorship of Kevin Kinsella of the U.S. Bureau of Census, Center for International Research, the purpose of this series is to promote understanding of the aging process in different nations through presentation of demographic, socioeconomic and health data on the elderly segment of each nation. A coordinated set of information, drawn primarily from the International Data Base on Aging (IDBA), on the various facets of the population aging process will be presented for a different nation each issue. Journal of Cross-Cultural Gerontology readers are already generally aware of the global increase in the number of elderly and the resulting challenges to individuals, families, communities and governments. However, important differences among nations in the actual experience of population aging are often obscured by the emphasis on the general phenomenon. For example, the rate of increase in the percent of elderly or the prevalence of disability or the existence of pension schemes may differ. The "Aging Trends" series highlights such variability by presenting information on the current state of the population aging process in a nation as well as projections for the future. The "Aging Trends" series will alert scholars, policymakers and teachers to geographic areas with unique research opportunities, service and policy needs.
