HEALTH OF CALCUTTA.

DURING the week ending 4th October the total number of deaths was'233 against 200 and 216 In the two preceding weeks, and 17 in excess of the corresponding week last year Under the head of cholera 11 deaths were registered against 8 and 15 in the two preceding weeks. There were no deaths from small-pox. The increase of deaths as compared with the preceding week was due to fever. Under this head 83 deaths were recorded against 63 in the preceding week, the quinquennial mean of the disease being 64. The heavy and late rains were doubtless the cause of the high fever mortality. The mortality for the week was at the rate of 28 per 1,000 per annum. During the week ending 1 ith October the total number of deaths registered was 205 against 233.and 200 in the two preceding weeks, and 36 less than the corresponding week last year. Under the head of cholera 10 deaths were registered against 11 and 8 in the two preceding weeks. The rate of mortality per 1,000 of population per annum was 29-59, calculated on the increase of population since iSSx. There were 95 deaths from remittent fever, 21 less than the previous week, and 31 more than in the same period last year. The deaths from diseases of the respiratory system, diarrhoea, and dysentery were last week 79, 29, and 14 respectively, as compared with 34, 18, and 10 in the same time last year.
