Editor’s Letter

Write On! Publishing in the Journal of Healthcare Risk Management The purpose of the Journal is to share information that risk managers experience in their institutions or practices. The Journal provides a forum to disseminate cutting-edge information, to review important topics, and to review case law updates published regularly and authored by the highly regarded John C. West. The first article in this issue studied the use of adverse event reports to predict subsequent claims. With the increased complexity and comprehensive nature of adverse event reports, this study clarified how to simplify the reports and operationalize how the risk manager should use them. Five recommendations were made to improve current reporting processes.

The second article in this issue focuses on decreasing intrapartum malpractice, targeting neonatal adverse outcomes. Obstetrical claims continue to be high in frequency and severity. This case study identifies risk reduction techniques that resulted in an increase in adverse event reporting and a decrease in high-risk malpractice events. The second victim in an adverse outcome or event is often the forgotten healthcare provider who cared for the patient and who was involved in the occurrence. Risk managers need to be involved in processes and systems that support the second victim. In the third article of this issue ASHRM members were surveyed to ascertain what programs are available in their institutions/facilities to support the second victim. What resources does your institution have to help the second victim? How does your institution compare to others?

Submit your manuscript There is a publication timetable outlining first draft submission dates followed by peer review comments and final draft deadlines that are posted on the ASHRM website. After submitting your first draft the article undergoes peer review. The articles are reviewed by at least two editorial review board (ERB) members and discussed in detail by the entire board in our monthly conference calls. Feedback is then given to authors, revisions are made, and the article is then submitted for final decisions of suitability for publication. Authors are mentored by ERB members to facilitate the publication of the author’s articles.
