FOREWORD In January 1988, The Orton Dyslexia Society lost one of its most valued pioneers, Sally Childs. The professional heir of Anna Gillingham, Mrs. Childs vigorously promoted the cause of dyslexics and through the meticulous training she gave teachers she continues to touch the lives of students across this country and in Great Britain. As the Society's second president she provided critical leadership and, subsequently, gave her support and wisdom generously to those who succeeded her. With sadness at her passing and with gratitude for her immeasurable contributions to dyslexics and to The Orton Dyslexia Society, we dedicate the thirty-eighth issue of Annals of Dyslexia to the memory of Sally Childs. Annals of Dyslexia selects papers representing the best in theory and practice in the field. Most of the papers in this issue are based on presentations at the Society's conference in San Francisco in 1987 and they reflect the quality of that program. We are indebted to Marcia K. Henry for her efforts in chairing the National Program Committee. As this issue of Annals of Dyslexia goes to press, Sylvia O. Richardson is completing her service as President of The Orton Dyslexia Society. I am deeply appreciative of Dr. Richardson's active interest in the Society's publications. She has encouraged editorial and publication ideas and given strong support to my efforts throughout her term of office. Once again, I thank Anne O'Flanagan, Executive Director, and her staff in the national office who contribute much to the production of An-

nals of Dyslexia. We welcome papers to be considered for publication in the 1989 issues of Annals of Dyslexia. Prospective authors may request a copy of Information for Contributors from the Society. All papers considered for publication are reviewed by authorities in the field to which their topic pertains. Papers in this issue as well as those appearing in previous issues (including those from Bulletin of the Orton Society) are available from The Orton Dyslexia Society, 724 York Road, Baltimore, Maryland 21204. Costs including postage and handling are: reprints--S2.00; photocopies--S2.50; cumulative index 1951-1986--$5.00.
