ABSTRACTT Nanotechnology involvingg manipulatio on of atoms and molecule es at the nan noscale is onee of the fron ntier areas off research in m modern science. During the last few yeaars, nanotech hnology has w witnessed breaakthroughs in n the fields off medicine, en nvironment, therapeutics, drug developpment and bio otechnology. This is due too the unique properties off nanomateriaals (e.g. chem mical, mecha anical, opticaal, magnetic, and biological) which m make them desirable forr commercial aand medical aapplications. C Considering thhe theory and d practice of u using nanoparrticles, nanote echnology hass a great poteential in impro oving treatme ent of variouss disorders and in vitro diagnostics. Hoowever, there e is not much h information available on the toxicity of o nanoparticlles in relation n to human health. Toxic eeffect of nano omaterials on n humans is th he primary co oncern of the e health indu stry. Nanomaaterials are able to cross bbiological membranes and d access cells, tissues and organs that larger‐sized partticles normallyy cannot. Nan nomaterials caan gain accesss to the blood d stream via in nhalation or in ngestion. This may lead to bboth genotoxicity and biochemical toxiciity. In this revview we try to o show which types, sizes aand concentra ations of nanooparticles are e safe for hum man use and tthis will help in developingg diagnostic, p prognostic and d therapeutic models using nanoparticles.
INTRODUCCTION Nanotechnology can be defined as the techniques a imed at charaacterizing and d producing m materials on th he nanometerr scale (
