Suffolk Academy ofMedicine Hauppauge, Long Island, New York ABSTRACT This subject list of 109 dental books and 20 dental journals is intended to help the dental book committee and the librarian of a small health sciences library achieve a balanced collection of dental books and journals. Cost of books totals $2,180.00, that ofjournals is $571.00, making a total of $2,751.00. Cost of starred books totals $927.30, that of starred journals is $109.50, making a total of $1,036.80.
A SEARCH of the literature reveals many articles covering the subject of small medical libraries; however, material regarding the composition of a small dental library is almost nonexistent. For example, in one article [1] relating to a health science core library, suggestions included one dental text and one journal. LaRocco and Jones [2], referring to a small library (medical and allied health fields), listed a dozen dental texts dealing with public health. In 1970 a list of reference books [3] for small medical libraries gave a total of eight dental texts, two of which were the American Dental Association Directory and the Admission Requirements of American Dental Schools. In 1975, Brandon's [4] list for a small medical library included a more complete coverage of dentistry than most articles reviewed prior to this time; however, even this list demonstrated a pressing need for more comprehensive coverage of dental material in health science libraries. Traditional locales of small dental libraries have been dental society headquarters and various educational foundations associated with dental and medical societies. With the increased emphasis on the hospital as a setting for continuing education for the dental profession as well as the medical profession, the need for a basic dental library in these settings becomes self-evident. The Suffolk Academy of Medicine included the Suffolk County Dental Society in the planning and structuring of its Health Sciences Library in 1966. Since there were no guidelines for a small dental library, the Dental Section of the Library Committee consulted with a committee appointed by the Suffolk County Dental Society and developed the dental section of the library. The Suffolk County Dental Society appropriated $1,000 per year for this project and has continued this appropriation to the present time. Over the past nine years this section has developed into a well-structured functional collection which has become a reference source for the practicing professional community as well as the faculty and student bodies of local educational institutions. The objective of such a small dental library is not to replace or equal major libraries, but rather to be a convenient supplement for such reference sources. Texts can be ordered directly from publishers; however, a reliable book dealer might be more convenient. Dealers offer a discount and often pay postage as well. Journals also can be ordered through an agent, although there is usually a service charge with this method. Depending on the size of the small dental library and the work load of the librarian, it might be more economical to order journals directly. The problems of working with a limited budget encourage a meticulous evaluation of needs; priorities must be evaluated and long-range planning as to purchases is vital. With care, in time a small dental library can be produced with quality material that is relevant to the professional interests of those using the library. The cost of the texts in this suggested list is approximately $2,180 and the annual journal cost is approximately $571 for a total of $2,751. Starred items are those suggested for first purchase. 265

Suffolk Academy ofMedicine Hauppauge, Long Island, New York ABSTRACT This subject list of 109 dental books and 20 dental journals is intended to help the dental book committee and the librarian of a small health sciences library achieve a balanced collection of dental books and journals. Cost of books totals $2,180.00, that ofjournals is $571.00, making a total of $2,751.00. Cost of starred books totals $927.30, that of starred journals is $109.50, making a total of $1,036.80.
A SEARCH of the literature reveals many articles covering the subject of small medical libraries; however, material regarding the composition of a small dental library is almost nonexistent. For example, in one article [1] relating to a health science core library, suggestions included one dental text and one journal. LaRocco and Jones [2], referring to a small library (medical and allied health fields), listed a dozen dental texts dealing with public health. In 1970 a list of reference books [3] for small medical libraries gave a total of eight dental texts, two of which were the American Dental Association Directory and the Admission Requirements of American Dental Schools. In 1975, Brandon's [4] list for a small medical library included a more complete coverage of dentistry than most articles reviewed prior to this time; however, even this list demonstrated a pressing need for more comprehensive coverage of dental material in health science libraries. Traditional locales of small dental libraries have been dental society headquarters and various educational foundations associated with dental and medical societies. With the increased emphasis on the hospital as a setting for continuing education for the dental profession as well as the medical profession, the need for a basic dental library in these settings becomes self-evident. The Suffolk Academy of Medicine included the Suffolk County Dental Society in the planning and structuring of its Health Sciences Library in 1966. Since there were no guidelines for a small dental library, the Dental Section of the Library Committee consulted with a committee appointed by the Suffolk County Dental Society and developed the dental section of the library. The Suffolk County Dental Society appropriated $1,000 per year for this project and has continued this appropriation to the present time. Over the past nine years this section has developed into a well-structured functional collection which has become a reference source for the practicing professional community as well as the faculty and student bodies of local educational institutions. The objective of such a small dental library is not to replace or equal major libraries, but rather to be a convenient supplement for such reference sources. Texts can be ordered directly from publishers; however, a reliable book dealer might be more convenient. Dealers offer a discount and often pay postage as well. Journals also can be ordered through an agent, although there is usually a service charge with this method. Depending on the size of the small dental library and the work load of the librarian, it might be more economical to order journals directly. The problems of working with a limited budget encourage a meticulous evaluation of needs; priorities must be evaluated and long-range planning as to purchases is vital. With care, in time a small dental library can be produced with quality material that is relevant to the professional interests of those using the library. The cost of the texts in this suggested list is approximately $2,180 and the annual journal cost is approximately $571 for a total of $2,751. Starred items are those suggested for first purchase. 265
